Christian Louboutin is the Paris shoe designer whose red sole began in 1992. While finishing a prototype of the Pensée model in his atelier, he painted its black sole with an assistant's red nail polish, and the color has been the house's signature ever since.

It is a luxury label, best known for women's pumps, with men's shoes, sneakers and leather goods alongside. Because the sole names the brand from across a room, shoppers treat a pair as a statement purchase and come looking for that flash of red.
